Annotations for Someone Out There Loves You Stay

Lyric: Say, the lights are really low enough to pray
Annotation:
This line speaks to something to confess. There’s something the speaker wants to say but can only say it in the dark. You can only be honest with yourself (or god in this case) if no one else can see you.

Lyric: And could you maybe kiss me when we
 Decimate the stars
Annotation:
This could be Gerard saying that he and the person he’s singing to will end up making such a difference that they will be able to “decimate the stars”. This could also be him saying that the “someone out there who loves you” is him as he asks if the listener could kiss him.

Lyric: Can you catch me when I’m falling down
Annotation:
This line may be a reference to the lead singer Gerard Way’s own experience of witnessing the 9/11 attacks in 2001 where he may have seen people jumping or falling off of the buildings. This event also lead to his motivation to make a difference and eventually create the band. He talks about it in this interview.

Lyric: And would you stay right here
 When I tell you
That someone out there loves you?
 Would you stay right here
 When I’d tell you
That someone out there loves you after all?
Annotation:
“Stay” is written towards people who are suicidal, self-deprecating individuals who believe the world would be better off without them. The chorus is asking them to “stay” (alive) becomes someone in the world loves them and that is reason enough to keep going.

Lyric: If there’s no one, no one out there?
Is there no one who, no one who cares?
If there’s no one, no one out there?
Is there no one like you to share?
 Then would you ask yourself?
 Would you ask yourself?
Annotation:
“Stay” is written towards people who are suicidal, self-deprecating individuals who believe the world would be better off without them. They feel that they’re all alone and have ‘no one’ to accompany them. The narrator reassures them that although it may seem like this, “someone out there” loves them and he asks them to reconsider their opinions on themselves.
